Our History
Founded in 1998 by a Ukiah local optician Chris Rehm, Ukiah Optical began serving its customers with excellent optical goods and services to take care of its customers. Chris loved traveling all over the world to scuba dive anytime he could get away from running the busy shop. One day he combined his passion and work to start another business Scuba Vision that customizes dive masks with prescription lenses. After 21 years Chris decided to move to Oregon to enjoy his life in retirement. In 2019 he sold both businesses to the current owner Frank Gomez, who had been the Ukiah Optical’s ZEISS lab rep at the time. Since then, Frank has been transforming Chris’ legacy into a full-service eyecare business. In 2022 the aftermath of the pandemic was still deeply affecting many optometrists in town and the Mendocino residents were struggling to get their appointments in for a vision check.
That’s when our independent optometrist Dr. Myers joined Ukiah Optical and began providing much needed eyecare services to the residents. This joint force has tremendously helped Ukiah Optical to become a complete eyecare service provider. With a myriad of Frank’s prior experience in the industry - from 25 years as an optician to repping for lens and frame manufacturing companies - and his passion for eyewear and unparalleled customer service, Ukiah Optical continues striving to provide the best eyecare services throughout Lake, Mendocino and surrounding counties.
